An elevated future for public transit

What? In July, 2016 the world's first elevated transit bus, one that straddles underlying traffic, successfully completed its first test drive in Qinhuangdao, China. The Chinese Transit Elevated Bus (TEB) is built on stilts that provide 2.1 meters of clearance, enabling the bus to drive above two lanes of traffic. A TEB can consist of up to four interlinked 72-foot long modules, each one of which can carry 300 passengers.
So what? The widespread use of TEBs could significantly improve traffic flow in big cities by replacing ordinary buses, and potentially freeing-up bus lanes for car traffic. The TEB's ability to transport up to 1,200 passengers means it could be a lower-cost alternative to subways while reducing transportation emissions and improving urban air quality.
