Compendium of Place-Based Initiatives in Canada

In preparing the special issue of Horizons on place-based initiatives we quickly realized that there were a number of such approaches to planning, policy and program delivery being implemented by the federal government, and by other governments and organizations across Canada. However, there was no common repository of information about these initiatives and little awareness of them beyond those people directly involved.

This document is an effort to fill this gap. While by no means exhaustive, it presents short descriptions of a number of existing place based initiatives in support of sustainable development. It is not designed to replace other sources of information, but simply to complement them. As a web-based tool, additional existing and new initiatives can be added on a regular basis, adding to its value as a resource. Those interested to provide a description of their initiative can contact the Sustainable Development team at the Policy Research Initiative.

Together with PRI's Web 2.0 application, Clearspace, the PRI is working to provide federal officials and others interested in policy research with a variety of knowledge tools that allows bringing an increasing amount of evidence on placebased initiatives to policy-makers and policy-making.
